A climate Campaign by Lauren darn
the campaign message
The photographs in this campaign are theatrical visualisations of a flooded Britain, intended to encourage you to imagine what could happen to low-lying towns and cities in the event of a 4°c rise in average temperatures. Millions of people currently live on land at risk from coastal flooding, and it will be impossible to build sufficient sea defences to protect every community. As polar ice caps continue to melt, coastlines will be submerged on every continent and it will be necessary to redraw our maps of the world. Humans are now the dominant cause of sea level rise, and it is more important than ever that each and every individual takes responsibility for anthropogenic climate change by adopting sustainable and low impact lifestyles. We all have enormous power to change the world if we, as billions of individuals, work together towards a common goal.
RISING SEAS IN THE UK
‘Sea level rise poses a significant threat to UK wildlife. We’re already seeing changes in the availability and quality of intertidal habitat and this is set to continue. This is really bad news for our wading birds which use these areas as foraging grounds. Similarly species such as little terns, which nest in colonies on sand and shingle beaches above the high tide line, will be vulnerable to increased storm events and the loss of their nesting habitat.’

Rising seas can send ocean water further inland. When this salt water contaminates it, fresh groundwater becomes useless for drinking or farming.

If sea-level in the Thames estuary was to rise by 50cm... we could expect a storm to overtop the barrier once per 150 years. Similarly, a sea-level rise of 100cm would increase the frequency of flooding to an average of once in only 12 years!
